Any Idiot Can Now Write a Book and Get It Published
... at least that's what I used to think.
The reality is that it's true; anyone can now write a book and get it published without a main-line trade publisher, but it's not an easy thing to do.
Writing the book is the easiest thing. Getting from there to having a finished, professionally printed and bound book in your hands is a lot more work. Getting anyone to sell it for you is a lot more work. Getting from there to the point where anyone knows about your wonderful work and wants to buy one is a lot more work. So this is probably not really something an "idiot" would be able to accomplish.
After all that, another reality is that you probably will not sell very many, and will not make very much money. So perhaps it would be accurate to say that only an idiot would want to become a self-publishing author in the first place.
Are you thinking about doing that anyway? Well then, give it a shot. Who knows? You might be the next J.K. Rowling or Earnest Hemmingway.
I'll be happy to help by sharing what I learned the hard way, and I'll do that for free. Author services or publishers won't do anything for you that you can't do for yourself. If you're willing to roll up your sleeves and wear a few different hats, you can get from where you're at now to the point were you have that book in your hands for the price of printing and binding a copy, plus shipping, which is usually less than $15. So before you waste your money to buy help, feel free to ask me what I know.
No, this is not a "bait 'n switch" scam or any other sort of gimmick. I'm not going to try to sell you anything. Not everyone is out to make a buck. There are other compensations.
